Sotheby's Villa Mauresque Catalogue: Fred Bason and Aubrey Beardsley
Continuing from the last post, the next one in the Sotheby's Villa Mauresque Catalogue is the first bibliography of Maugham's work, written by Fred Bason, a bookseller, who got to know Maugham by sending a letter telling the author he didn't quite like his play, The Unknown.
- Bason (Fred) A Bibliography of the Writings of William Somerset Maugham, number 742 of 1,000 copies, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by the author to Somerset Maugham, 1946, on endleaf and below dedication, an A.L.s written at the same time loosely inserted, original cloth, 8vo, 1931
Bason didn't seem to be in Maugham's biographers' graces, described as an opportunist, chasing after autographs for their reselling prices, a pusher, a Cockney stereotype, and that he refused Maugham's supposed advances when he declined the invitation to visit Villa Mauresque. (Calder, pp. 226–228; Connon, pp. 95–96; Morgan, pp. 323–328; Hastings, pp. 370–371)
Reading these pages, at times it almost feels like Maugham was drooling at any young male that got into his orbit.
Bason was also tasked with the sale of Maugham's manuscripts, which went south when both were dissatisfied with the agreement they thought they had.
As Maugham's biographies naturally focus on Maugham, other people appear more one dimensional. Paul Robinson's post on Fred Bason is an easy read and has a fuller picture of the bookseller.
I have seen a letter from Bason to one John Connell, supposedly John Henry Robertson, a reporter for London Evening News. Bason was thanking him for the reviews on his Diaries vols. 1 and 2, and hoped for an equally good review for the third. There was a vague invitation to meet in person and Bason boasted that he was sure he could make Connell laugh.
Bason was certainly good at networking.
The bibliography, of course, is now outdated, having long been superseded by more comprehensive works, notably Stott's authoritative bibliography. But even in its own day, it was hardly greeted with unreserved admiration. In the Rothschild's collection is a manuscript of a review by the Viscount Esher (Oliver Brett):
This is a thoroughly bad and slipshod piece of work, and collectors will be well advised to pay no attention to it. The essence of bibliography is research and accuracy and this book is conspicuous by the absence of both. (Rothschild, p. 313)
Auch!
Maugham graced the bibliography with a preface, a facsimile of his signature, and an extract from the manuscript of his preface to another of Bason's books, Gallery Unreserved.
The book and the inserted letter from Bason to Maugham are now in Harry Ransom Center.
The next item on the list is Aubrey Beardsley's Under the Hill.
- Beardsley (Aubrey) Under the Hill, and other Essays in Prose and Verse, illustrations and cover designs by the author, original cloth gilt, t.e.g., 4to, 1904
This is likely to be Maugham's personal reading copy. Maugham did correspond with Aubrey's sister, Mabel. Morgan quoted a letter in which Maugham mentioned to Mabel the harshness of Canadian winter when he was there collecting materials for the play Land of Promise (1913) (p. 177).
