In this post, I am going to continue with the Sotheby Catalogue of the contents of Villa Mauresque auctioned in 1967, after Maugham's death.
In the last post, I talked in some length about Richard Aldington. This time we will have a short post and look at one book, just to keep me going.
- Arlen (Michael) May Fair, FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, inscribed by the author to Somerset Maugham, original cloth, 8vo, 1925
Michael Arlen formed part of the literary scene that Maugham was in during the 1920s and '30s, and was one of the frequent guests to the Villa Mauresque (Morgan, p. 394), especially after the success with his bestseller The Green Hat, from the proceeds of which, he bought a property outside Cannes (Hastings, p. 377). He shared a bottle of 1911 Lanson champagne with Maugham and Arnold Bennett, sitting on the floor, at a party thrown by the producer Messmore Kendall (Morgan, pp. 349–350).
The Green Hat is a novel with a nymphomaniac as heroine, spells out "syphilis" and contains two suicides, which shocked the sensibility of its readers. It being banned from lending libraries in Britain only made it more popular. Geroge H. Doran told an amusing story that he published The Green Hat almost simultaneously with a translation of the New Testament (Doran, p. 66).
Anecdotally interesting was a "titanic" (according to Calder, p. 205) tennis match between Arlen and Maugham in August 1928, which drew the whole crowd of Cap Ferrat to Villa Mauresque. Coached by Godfrey Winn, Maugham won Arlen 13–11 (Morgan, p. 317). The pair also played golf together, and Arlen's wife the Countess joined—the visit, not the match, presumably, as she was hugely pregnant and not very well (Morgan, p. 362).
May Fair, in the Sotheby catalogue, is a collection of short stories. Maugham seemed to have Arlen's more well-known The Green Hat, which he donated to the King's School, together with The Romantic Lady and Men Dislike Women. "Seemed" because I saw two catalogues that don't contain the same information.
I wonder though, how Maugham decided which books to keep until the end and leave to Searle to do with as he wished, and which books to gift to King's School. Potential selling price? Values for the education of young boys? Drawing future researchers to King's School? Books he still wanted to reference and keep close? Books with sentimental values?
