Today is the 143rd anniversary of W. Somerset Maugham's birth. As in the past three years, I celebrate this occasion with a video. This year I have prepared one with Maugham reading his short story "The Three Fat Women of Antibes."
This is the first audio recording I have of Maugham reading his stories, and it was the first time I listened to his voice. I stumbled upon this LP by a happy accident in my early collecting days and imagine the thrill! I had no LP player then and the seller was so kind to open the LP (as it was new) and made me a recording on a CD, for which I will forever feel grateful.
"The Three Fat Women of Antibes"
For modern taste, this title may seem a little blunt. But remember, this is a story published in 1933, and we should work against anachronic criticism and don't judge our predecessors' morals or sense of propriety with our own standards too hard. It is only then we can learn from history and not dismissing it.
This story was first published in Hearst's International Combined with Cosmopolitan in October 1933; in the following month, it was printed in Nash's Pall Mall with the same illustrations by Henry Raleigh, who illustrated heavily in the popular magazines of his time. He also illustrated another earlier Maugham story, "The Alien Corn." Subsequently, the story was collected in The Mixture as Before (1940)
This is a hilarious story and should be treated no more than a farce. Anyone who has ever tried a diet (I had) should recognize the underlying humour in it. The restraint, the determination, the self-discipline, and the sudden loss of every single grip you have of your goal that is always in sight a little bit farther ahead.
Of course it's not as simple as that. Maugham's stories usually have more levels. The relationships among the women are superb. How a stranger to a group can alter the whole dynamics. A foreign element that makes everything go upside down.
Rogal, citing Alexander Frere (Maugham's literary executor and friend), writes that the three women were based on Denise Orme, Charlotte Ives, and Maxine Elliott, actresses and frequent visitors to Villa Mauresque (A William Somerset Maugham Encyclopedia, London, Greenwood Press, 1997, p. 279).
Three women, fat, middle age, have become friends while taking the slimming treatment at Carlsbad. All with easy circumstance (well, they went to Carlsbad...), they get on quite well and they have decided one year not to waste all the pain and suffering of the one month of diet and exercise and rent a place at Antibes to lose a few more pounds with companionship and encouragement. This plan, which went quite well at first, is disrupted with the arrival of Lena Finch, one of the fat women's cousins who has recently lost her husband, and thus must eat to combat her depression. So go figure.
What is so special about this story is how Maugham can tell a joke with straight face. The choice of words can't be better. I bet he had a great time writing it. A good laugh at human folly. Yes, I guess there are moment of maliciousness, but you feel that it isn't with bad intention.
