I came across an interesting article today, written by Jeffrey Meyers, one of Maugham's biographers. I am still very behind in terms of reading Maugham's biographies. From what I have been flipping here and there looking for references, Meyers' biography strikes me as professional and well-documented, although it doesn't seem to get too much attention.
Meyers recounts several gems that he came across while researching his subjects, besides Maugham were Sylvia Plath and Robert Lowell.
Concerning Maugham, Meyers talks about the manuscript of "Looking Back," which presumably contains more than what was published, and which was precisely what caused the storm at the end of Maugham's life.
I thought the published parts were quite mild and didn't deserve the alleged indignant responses from his circle.
Meyers succeeded in locating the owner of the manuscript, who, unfortunately, didn't welcome the prying eyes.
I can quite understand both parts. So close to the holy grail and yet the door is closely shut. On the other hand, one's privacy is sacred. It is an infringement to make one feel obliged to explain to posterity what I choose to do with my possessions/memories.
So, here we are. In the hands of time and patience.
