W. Somerset Maugham – Proposed for The Nobel Prize in 1965

I came across a piece of very interesting news today. In 1965, the year of his demise, W. Somerset Maugham was proposed to be a receiver of The Nobel Prize!
I have to confess that I have asked myself the question many times, why didn't Maugham receive The Nobel Prize? A question that I assume many people ask about authors that they happen to like.
And so, here it is, Maugham did make it to the list, after all. The Guardian reports today the opening up of the Swedish Academy's archive for the year 1965.
There were ninety people on the list and Maugham was put on as no. 51, proposed by Jean-Albert Bédé (1903–1977), professor at Columbia University, editor of the Columbia Dictionary of Modern European Literature. Regretfully, no one has thought of giving Bédé a Wikipedia entry (this sounds funny for some reasons, must have made Bédé turn in his grave), so that is all I can tell you about him at the moment, I am afraid.
