Although this post may seem like a commercial for Noilly Prat, I assure you that it is not.
Some time ago I came across this page of advertisement on sale, and I have to say that I fully agree with W. Somerset Maugham, yet again. Lamentably, where I am now, Noilly Prat is not to be got. It should not be a problem, since I tend to believe that nothing is indispensable, but you know how the mind can trick you. For some time I made do with Dolin... however, memory lingers, in the funniest way.
This is not the subject of this post, though. I was intrigued when I saw the advertisement: where can this quote come from? From Points of View, it says.
And truly, it does come from there, in the most unlikely context, at first glance. But then, wait a second, and you burst out laughing. Let me quote the whole thing:
Isvara creates the world and after a period withdraws it within himself; after another period he re-creates it. During the interval, the souls that are still subject to the penalty of birth and rebirth remain dormant. It is natural to ask why Isvara should create the world again and again. The answer supplied is that opportunity must be given to those souls to atone for their past errors, and the process must be endless, for it had no beginning. Evil is a necessary component of him just as (if I may be permitted a flippant comparison) Noilly Prat is a necessary component of a dry martini. Now, yes, I do miss my Noilly Prat. Will have to cross the border clandestinely.

Great post. I've seen this ad too. I suppose he's saying that Noilly Prat is a necessary evil? As for me, I'm off the alcohol since November of last year. Was never a consistent drinker/addict, but I was definitely an alcohol abuser; in other words sometimes when I would start, I wouldn't stop until I blacked out. So, I decided to cut it off altogether. Drinking a little intermittently leaves the window open for that one night I'm not going to want to stop.

I just find it hilarious that Noilly Prat used it, and at the same time, it was perfect.
DeleteOff alcohol, quite something, require a lot of will power. It's one of the things that one feels coerced into doing nowadays, abstinence as one of 21c religions. The others are work out, go vegan, eat organic... just joking. :-)
However, I have never been able to manage it, and on the other hand, immortality has little attraction for me. So, my little evil.
Where are you that you can't get Noilly Prat? They reintroduced it in the US a few years ago, both the old recipe and the new old recipe (or is it the old new recipe?). You can get both at The Wine House on Cotner in West LA.
