Two Editions of Theatre by W. Somerset Maugham

Theatre (1937) is one of my favourite novels by W. Somerset Maugham. The most recent film adaption, Being Julia (2004), directed by István Szabó and with Annette Bening as Julia Lambert is, I would say, the most Maugham of Maugham movies. But all this is by the way. When I started to collect Maugham's first editions, my goal was to get all the first editions apparently; it must have been naïve of me not to think that I would probably end up having several copies of many of his books.
I bought the first UK edition of Theatre some years ago, which, I did not realize at that time that there were more than one issue and that the US edition came out first, which, strictly speaking, would be the true first.
So, when I came across a US edition I got one. However, when it arrived, it was not the first US edition, but a first Canadian edition, which was not recorded by Stott. It would be curious to know what other simultaneous editions were released in other English-speaking countries, especially for Maugham's later books.
The physical description is the same as registered by Stott (A52a), except two details. One is on p. [iv], instead of 38 "Books by W. Somerset Maugham" there are 39, which leads to the assumption that the Canadian edition came out after the US on 3 March 1937, and which is to be expected. The UK edition from Heinemann, nevertheless, lists 45 works. The second difference is on the title page, which gives the address of Doubleday, Doran and Company (Canada) Ltd.

The second edition of Theatre I am going to talk about is a French translation, very pretty, a gift that I received for my collection.
It includes a series of translated quotes of Maugham on diverse topics, on himself, old age, vocation, life and work, art, literary experience, cinema, etc., together with photos of London and his staged plays. Unfortunately, there is no record of the translator. The novel belongs to the series "Le Club de la Femme."
It was published after A French Bibliography of W. Somerset Maugham (1967) by William H. Henry, Jr. and, naturally, is not on the catalogue.

ReplyDeleteSO, published in Spain by Rombaldi... copyright 1970- however copyright is not always exactly the same as printing date, is it? It's bound in dark green leather, and is gold embossed on the spine and on the front cover. Quite an attractive book, actually. That's the only reason I bothered to look it up. :) It's clean and in very good condition- no inscriptions, rips, tears, damage or smells. The pages have a slight yellowing around the edges due to age. This book has a preface which includes black and white photos. That's about everything I can tell you about it. I'm not a book expert and I don't speak French!!
I am afraid it won't fetch more than a few dollars. It sounds like the copy that I have, only with a different binding. It also could be a rebound copy from your description, but I can't be sure without seeing it. I am not familiar with translations of Maugham's works, so I can't say whether they issued a special edition of this particular book. Hope this helps.
